Retirement and Leadership Transition

Passing the torch

Hello Owners and Board Members!

I am excited to announce that I am retiring from active condominium management. My colleague Ashlee Henry has taken on leadership of Alwington Communities in the role of Executive Vice-President of Condominium Operations.

For those owners who have not met Ashlee, let me introduce her more formally and tell you a little more about her. Ashlee has been with our firm for a few years now, and she has spent nearly a decade in the condominium management industry. At Alwington she has been working directly with board members and behind the scenes building out our operations as our firm has been growing. Her strengths are too many to describe in full, so let me tell you about just a few:

  • She’s highly educated and holds an MBA and a CMRAO General Licence.

  • She boasts a great deal of operational experience across the province. She has managed in large cities and small towns. She has seen high rises, low rises, townhouses, commercial condominiums, and everything in between.

  • She is highly involved in the industry and respected by her peers. She was recently elected by her colleagues in the Association of Condominium Managers of Ontario (ACMO) to the board of directors, where she the board will focus on growing the professionalism of the industry.

In short, Ashlee is eminently qualified to lead our firm and she has my unwavering support and recommendation.

As for myself, I have a few projects to wrap up over the coming weeks before departing the firm. After a period of rest with my family, I plan on continuing my service to the industry through research and as an advisor.

Reflections

A departure is a good time to reflect on what we have accomplished at Alwington. We began the firm with a dream to provide exceptional condominium management services. I was our firm’s first CMRAO licenced condominium manager – albeit a manager with no condo corporations to manage. So, I went out and knocked on doors and met with board members. Our first customers were two beautiful condo corporations in Guelph: Solstice 1 and Solstice 2. The boards took a leap of faith on our firm and placed their trust in us. For this we are eternally grateful. We’re still working together all of these years later, so I like to think that trust was well placed.

From our beginnings with 1 condominium manager (me), 0 corporations and 0 units under management we grew to where we are now: nearly 3,000 units under management across 53 condominium corporations. Our firm extends from London and Guelph in the west, through the GTA to Brockville and Cornwall in the east. Our firm is where 14 condominium managers and 10 members of our operations and accounting teams choose to grow and build their careers, and to serve our owners and board members. These team members boast CMRAO licences, bachelor’s and master’s degrees, college diplomas, accounting designations, not to mention CPM and RCM designations.

I too am proud of the Alwington team’s involvement in the condominium management industry – much of which they do on their own time, purely to grow and better the industry as a whole. Over the last few years our team has been involved in ACMO and CCI presentations to board members and owners, we have taught the very courses that are required to earn condominium management licences, have presented at a number of conferences, and have sat on boards and committees such as the ACMO membership committee, and of course Ashlee’s seat on the ACMO board of directors.

As I end this chapter of my career I end with a few thank yous: a big thank you to the members of the Alwington team who have trusted us with their careers, and who we trust to take care of our owners and board members; to my colleagues in the industry who I have worked with; and a big thank you to the owners and board members who choose our firm as the one to manage their homes and investments

I have greatly enjoyed the relationships I have built over the last decade and look forward to staying in touch.

Sincerely,

Michael
